Veselin Vukotić's sentence for murder was suspended

Veselin Vukotić, who was convicted in absentia for the murder of Duško Bošković in 1997 in Montenegro, was suspended by the Novi Sad court for serving a sentence of 20 years in prison, because his request for a repeat of the proceedings was accepted, spokeswoman for that court, Svetlana Tomić Jokić, told Vijesta.

The non-trial criminal panel also rejected the prosecution's proposal to remand Vuković to custody.

Since the prosecution appealed against that decision, the position of the Appellate Court is awaited on whether the case will be remanded or not, after which a new trial will be scheduled to begin, most likely in June, she stated.

Vukotić is at liberty, as his sentence was terminated by an earlier decision of the Ministry of Justice of Serbia and he was approved for treatment due to heart problems.

The Appellate Court in Novi Sad recently confirmed the decision of the High Court, which rejected Montenegro's request to extradite Vukotić to serve a sentence of 20 years in prison, because the prerequisites for his extradition were not met. The final decision will be made by the Ministry of Justice of Serbia.
