A breath sensor, developed by Siemens, is a newly designed device that will help asthma patients predict if they are about to have an attack, hours before it happens.
This will give them valuable time to take anti-inflammatory drugs and prevent an attack episode that would otherwise require them to be hospitalized.
The manufacturer of the sensor device is Siemens, it is the size of a mobile phone and works on the principle of analyzing the patient's breath.
Then it determines the amount of nitrogen monoxide in it.
The device then converts nitrogen monoxide into nitrogen dioxide.
It is so sensitive that it can determine a quantity such as a billionth part of a sample, how much, for example, would was the amount of sugar if you put one cube in a 50-meter pool, writes 24sata.hr.
Until now, the only way to predict the time of asthmatic attacks was complex lung analyses.
- Now we know that exhaled amounts of nitrogen oxide indicate the process of inflammation in the lungs, and further research could significantly help in the treatment of asthma - said Dr. Elaine Vickers, from the British Association of Asthmatics.
