Healthy teeth greatly affect the health of the whole organism. Scientists warn that poor oral hygiene is directly related to type 2 diabetes. They base their claim on a five-year study in which 9.670 people participated.
"We found a close relationship between blood glucose levels and the number of teeth lost," says lead study author Rainald Samoa of the National Medical Center in Duarte, California.
The connection is periodontitis - a chronic inflammation of the gums that has been found in people who have subsequently been diagnosed with diabetes.
Periodontitis is caused by bacteria from infected tartar, and in addition to causing tooth loss, periodontitis can cause type 2 diabetes.
But diabetes is not the only disease related to teeth.
Bacteria from the oral cavity that cause the formation of tartar can enter the bloodstream and lead to the formation of clots in the arteries and cardiovascular problems.
Therefore, brush your teeth regularly and thoroughly and go to the dentist, reports Radio Sarajevo.
