ATMs are as dirty and full of bacteria as public toilets, according to the latest research by British scientists.
- The results are surprising, because ATMs are not only full of bacteria, but contain the same amount and types of bacteria as toilets and cause numerous diseases - said the doctor Richard Hastings, a microbiologist at BioCote, which conducted the research.
Experts, according to The medical news, took samples from the buttons on city ATMs across Great Britain, which are used by thousands of people every day. At the same time, they took samples from the toilet seats of nearby public toilets and compared them with those from ATMs. Analysis of the samples showed that there are bacteria that cause nausea and diarrhea on ATMs and toilets.
According to one of BioCote's earlier surveys of the dirtiest public places, ATMs were in tenth place with slightly more than 42 percent of respondents considering them extremely dirty. The research was then conducted on 3,000 adults and it was then shown that the dirtiest are telephone booths.
- Public telephones are dangerous for health, because apart from being used by a large number of people every day, they are close to the nose and mouth. It is enough for someone to carry the flu virus and anyone who uses the phone after it gets sick. However, it is ironic that people believe that ATMs are cleaner, because our research has shown that they are just as dirty as toilets - said Dr. Richard Hastings.
