Most of us use deodorant every day without even realizing the dangers hidden in it.
The worst thing is, not only in it, but also in products like shampoo, soap, detergent, air freshener, cleaning agent...
Because of the strong odors, experts warn of potential health risks associated with the chemicals.
"Breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, migraines, dizziness, rashes, suffocation, nausea and a number of other problems," enumerated some of those health risks, Professor Anna Steinman from the University of Melbourne.
Last year, Steinman conducted a study on the effects of prolonged exposure to the above-mentioned products. The results showed that 33 percent of respondents had problems with migraines and asthma attacks while using scented products such as air fresheners and cleaning products, writes Men's Health.
This research is not the only one that has confirmed the link between products like deodorant and health problems. A number of studies have shown that phthalates, compounds often used in soaps and shampoos, can have serious consequences.
"These compounds are associated with disorders of the male reproductive system, and are also suspected of affecting neurodevelopmental disorders," said Professor Header Patisaul from the University of North Carolina.
She added that, in addition to phthalates, some other compounds also affect the secretion of testosterone, which can cause loss of energy, erectile dysfunction or problems with building or maintaining muscle. A 2014 study points to even more dangerous effects of styrene, a chemical found in personal hygiene products that can cause cancer. Animal studies have shown a link between styrene and lung, breast, stomach and liver cancer.
To reduce these risks and exposure to chemicals, buy products that are unscented and use alternatives for household cleaning.
