The Serbian national team in taekwondo Milica Mandić and the kayakers Milenko Zorić and Marko Tomićević were announced tonight at a ceremony in the Parliament of Serbia as the best athletes in the traditional selection of the Olympic Committee of Serbia (OCS).
Mandićeva, who was the most successful athlete in 2012 as well, completed her treasure trove of medals this year by winning a gold medal at the World Championship in South Korea. In addition, she won second place at the European Championship and the Grand Prix tournament in Morocco.
In August 2017, Milenko Zorić and Marko Tomićević became world champions in Račice, Czech Republic, and previously won silver at the European Championship in Plovdiv.
The water polo national team was chosen for the 13th time as the most successful men's team. In 2017, that selection won gold in the World League and bronze at the World Championship.
In the women's competition, the award went to the volleyball team, which this year won third place at the Grand Prix in China and gold at the European Championships in Azerbaijan and Georgia.
The best young athlete was volleyball player Tijana Bošković, who was declared the best player of the European Championship.
At the ceremony, OKS President Božidar Maljković congratulated all the athletes and their coaches on the medals won in the past year.
"The year behind us was extremely successful for our athletes and probably the best post-Olympic year we can remember. That the eight medals at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were not a coincidence is shown by more than 20 medals won at the world and European championships, in Olympic disciplines, this year," said Maljkovic.
