Heartburn is caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus. It is formally called gastroesophageal reflux disease, and it is more than just discomfort, considering that it can significantly reduce the quality of life.
8 tips against heartburn
1. Meal size matters
Eating a large meal increases the pressure on the stomach muscles, whose task is to keep food in this organ and prevent it from returning to the esophagus.
2. Avoid late meals
Eating a meal three hours before going to bed can make heartburn worse.
3. Avoid exercising right after a meal
After a meal, wait a few hours for the stomach to digest the food, and then engage in physical activities.
4. Sleep in a semi-elevated position
If you have problems with heartburn at night, a good pillow and an elevated head will not be enough.
5. Educate yourself about food
Spicy and fatty foods, citrus fruits, carbonated drinks, coffee and the like encourage heartburn, so it is best to avoid these foods or at least limit their amount.
6. Medicines possible sentence
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if there is a possibility that the medicines you are taking are causing heartburn.
7. Chew gum without sugar
Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which helps neutralize acid, soothes the esophagus and pushes acid back into the stomach. Avoid gum with peppermint, as it promotes heartburn.
8. Be easy
Increased body mass exerts additional pressure on the stomach and pushes the contents of the stomach into the esophagus.
