Antibacterial soaps and gels are useless and may cause more harm than good, scientists have warned.
The statement published in the scientific magazine "Perspective of Environmental Health" also warns against using antimicrobial agents in food storage.
Environmental experts point out that ordinary soap and water are the best way to protect against diseases.
Experts warn that antibacterial products, some of which are already banned in the USA and the ban is gradually being introduced in Europe, can cause harm, especially to pregnant and lactating women.
"People think that antimicrobial hand soap provides better protection against diseases, but they are no better than ordinary soap and water," said Dr. Barbara Setler, professor of environmental health at the University of San Francisco, reports Radio Sarajevo.
