Scientists have discovered a new antibiotic, which is very effective against bacteria resistant to already known antimicrobial agents.
The antibiotic was found in a soil sample from Italy, specifically in a bacteria found in the soil, and it was named "pseudouridimycin" or "PUM", according to AFP.
The antibiotic successfully eliminated a wide range of bacteria in laboratory tests and cured mice infected with scarlet fever.
Details of the invention were published on Thursday in a scientific journal in the USA under the name "Sel". immunity to its effects than all other drugs on the market.
"PUM" successfully eliminated more than 20 types of bacteria in experiments and proved to be particularly effective against streptococci and staphylococci, several of which are resistant to many antibiotics.
Clinical trials of "PUM" could begin in the next three years, while the antibiotic is expected to be on the market in the next 10 years, according to researchers at Rutgers-New Brunswick University in New Jersey and from the Italian biotechnology company "Nikons".
They state that this discovery showed that the bacteria found in the soil are the best source of new antibiotics, reports Nezavisne.
