The exhibition "Titanic - Carpathia - Rijeka" was opened in the "Nikola I" gallery in Nikšić, in which the journey and wreck of the most famous passenger ship in history, as well as the life of the "Karpatija" ship, which was the only one that came to the aid of the "Titanic" and sailed is on the line New York - Rijeka (then Austria-Hungary).
The picture and words tell the story of the development of the port of Rijeka, which Hungary expanded to accommodate transoceanic ships, as a counterpart to Trieste, about the ship "Karpatija", on which there were about seventy Croats and which became famous for rescuing the surviving passengers and crew members from "Titanic", as well as a photo-story about "Titanic", with letters, testimonies, photographs, posters, drawings and sketches.
"The story of the 'Titanic' cannot indirectly bypass the northern Adriatic and the city of Rijeka... According to sources, around 40 passengers from Austria-Hungary bought tickets for the 'Titanic', and only three of them survived the tragedy of the shipwreck", he wrote is the author of the exhibition Nikša Mendeš, and read by Milosav Milatović, curator at the JU "Museums and Galleries" Nikšić.
Special attention at the exhibition was given to Josip Car, a waiter from "Karpatija", who managed to save a "piece" of the Titanic. He brought home a life jacket as a souvenir, and the people of Nikšić had the opportunity to see its replica.
"As one of five preserved examples in the world, and the only one in Europe, the vest is a direct link between the Titanic and the Karpatija with Rijeka. As a valuable exhibit, it preserves the memory of the greatest maritime tragedy, but also the brave Croatian sailors who were part of the crew of the ship 'Karpatija,'" Mendeš wrote.
The vest was donated by Josip's wife to the Sušak City Museum in the 20s, and today it is in the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Coast in Rijeka.
The crew of the ship "Karpatija", which was the closest to the "Titanic" that fateful night, managed to save 712 passengers and crew members.
The exhibition, which will be open for the next ten days, is the work of the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral from Rijeka, with the mediation of the Community of Montenegrins from Rijeka and JU "Museums and Galleries" Nikšić, and as part of the Cultural Development Support Program.
