Consumption of more than four sandwiches with dried meat products per week can be dangerous for health, especially for asthmatics, according to a study conducted on 1000 French subjects.
Scientists believe that too much meat products in the diet can have a particularly dangerous effect on asthmatics due to the sodium nitrite additive used in the preservation of products obtained from meat processing, the media reports.
Sodium nitrite makes dried meat products retain their red color, and it is known that larger amounts in the body can interfere with the transport of oxygen in the blood and cells.
Their consumption can make it difficult for the normal functioning of the respiratory tract, but scientists say that it is necessary to conduct additional research before making final conclusions, and in the meantime they advise the consumption of healthy food and a variety of foods, such as the Mediterranean diet.
Meat products have been associated with cancer for many years, so scientists advise that you consume no more than 70 grams of dried meat products per day, that is, no more than one sausage and one slice of bacon.
French scientists followed the eating habits of the respondents from 2003 to 2013. Half of the respondents suffered from asthma, and no such condition was recorded in the other volunteers and in the control group.
The study focused on the relationship between asthma symptoms - a feeling of lack of air with and without the phenomenon of stertorous breathing (loud, audible breathing in the form of wheezing), pressure in the chest with a feeling of bloated lungs, attacks of dry cough - and the consumption of two slices of ham, one sausage and two slices of salami, Radiosarajevo.ba.
