Tencent has updated the Steam page for its game Light of Motiram just days after Sony filed a lawsuit claiming that the upcoming game is a "shameless copy" of Horizon, IGN reports.
The lawsuit, filed in late July in California, outlined a number of similarities, comparing promotional screenshots from both games, as well as their descriptions. As explained at the time, just like Horizon, Light of Motiram takes place in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by giant robotic dinosaurs in vast natural environments such as tropical forests, deserts, and snowy mountains. Both titles feature red-haired female protagonists who wear very similar costumes and styles.
Sony believes that these similarities are not coincidental. According to the lawsuit, Tencent allegedly began development of Light of Motiram in 2023, and at the 2024 Game Developers Conference, the company's representatives approached Sony colleagues with a proposal to obtain a license to develop its own Horizon game. Sony rejected the proposal, but Tencent allegedly continued development of Light of Motiram. When Sony learned of the game, it tried to informally resolve the copyright dispute, but Tencent then allegedly sought a license for Horizon again. After that, Tencent continued to promote and test the game.
The Game Post portal notes that since the lawsuit became public, the Steam page for Light of Motirama has been quietly modified, removing some of the game's screenshots and trailer, and changing the cover photo.
The game's description has also been changed. Interestingly, the tentative release date, which was previously "to be announced", has now been changed to "fourth quarter 2027".
It remains to be seen whether these changes will satisfy Sony's lawyers, especially since several striking similarities between the games still exist. Sony is seeking damages and costs of up to $150.000 for each work that infringes Horizon's copyright, as well as the destruction of all infringing material. MV
