The sequel to the game Hogwarts Legacy could arrive as early as next year

The long-awaited sequel to the video game "Hogwarts Legacy" could be released as early as next year, Warner Bros. Discovery executives have hinted.

The original game launched in 2023 and sold more than 12 million copies in its first two weeks, despite calls for a boycott due to Harry Potter author JK Rowling's stance on transgender people. Nevertheless, the title became one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Last year, it was announced that a planned expansion for the game had been canceled in order for the development team to focus on a "high-priority" sequel. Meanwhile, Netflix's announced $82,7 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has raised questions about the future of the gaming studio, after it was announced that the streaming giant has no immediate plans to develop that segment of the business.

During the latest financial results presentation, Warner Bros. Discovery's president of global streaming and games, JB Peret, described 2025 as a "reset year," after 2024 releases "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" and "MultiVersus" failed to meet expectations.

"The real results will start to come in 2027 and 2028, when we return to some of our biggest franchises," Peret said.

Earlier, the company's top management announced that the focus in the future will be on four key gaming franchises: "Hogwarts Legacy", "Mortal Kombat", "Game of Thrones" and the DC universe, "especially Batman".

Hogwarts Legacy is set 100 years before the events of the Harry Potter novels, but according to available information, the sequel could be connected to the upcoming HBO adaptation of the "Harry Potter" series. The development team is reportedly working to align key narrative elements of the sequel with the stories that will be shown in the new television series.
