The new Mortal Kombat movie has also brought new plans for the continuation of the popular video game franchise, confirmed by one of its creators, Ed Bun.

The original Mortal Kombat was released in 1992 and has spawned a series of sequels, an animated series, a feature film, and comic books. After 11 main games, the series was rebooted in 2023 with Mortal Kombat 1.

Last year, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 would no longer receive new characters or stories after the Khaos Reigns DLC pack, as the team was moving on to the next project, but it was not revealed at the time what this was about.

In a new interview with Collider, Bun has now confirmed that a sequel to Mortal Kombat 1 is in the works.

"We are definitely working on a new Mortal Kombat. We are also developing more projects, we have more things in the pipeline, not just games but other forms of media. Big announcements are coming soon," he said.
