"God Of War: Laufey" is coming in 2027 with a physical release

The team working on the game "God Of War: Laufey" has confirmed that the title will be released before January 2028.

Earlier this month, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it would no longer release games in physical form, i.e. on discs, starting in January 2028.

"This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends, as the preference for digital media significantly outweighs interest in physical discs. This change will allow us to better align with how our community most often accesses and plays games today," the company said in a blog post.

Over the weekend, the development team at Sony Santa Monica Studios, which is behind the game "God Of War: Laufey", confirmed that the title will still receive a physical release on disc, meaning it will be released before the end of 2027.

The game "God Of War: Laufey" was announced earlier this year, and the plot will follow Kratos' wife Laufey through the afterlife of the gods, after her death at the beginning of the 2018 sequel that rebooted the series.

However, the iconic hero Kratos will not be permanently removed from the series. Sony Santa Monica studio head Corey Barlog previously explained that this game is just part of a larger story that they want to explore through different characters.

"Even though 'God Of War: Laufey' is something different, it's still part of the bigger picture of what we want to explore through all these different characters. But Kratos games will always exist throughout the history of the series," said Barlog.

The studio also made a statement on the social network X, saying that "Kratos is still the God of War" and that they have "many more stories they want to tell with him."

PlayStation's decision to skip physical game releases in the future has been met with negative reactions from some players and authors.
