"Wolverine" under attack from negative reactions

One of the key people at Insomniac Games has spoken out about the "merciless" negative reviews that are spreading online about their upcoming game "Marvel's Wolverine".

James Stevenson, director of community relations and marketing at Insomniac, wrote on social network X: “I think the way this algorithm amplifies and enforces negativity is making me reconsider my stance on whether to tell developers to watch or post here. It’s a relentless avalanche that I can’t believe is good for anyone’s mental health or represents a real picture.”

“Marvel's Wolverine” is set to be released for PlayStation 5 on September 15th, but trailers and gameplay footage have sparked a lot of negative reactions on social media. Some fans claim that the game is visually reminiscent of “Ben 10: Protector of Earth,” while others criticize it for relying on narrative elements familiar from previous big AAA games.

First announced in 2021, Marvel's Wolverine stars Australian actor Liam McIntyre as Wolverine, a character made famous on the big screen by Hugh Jackman. The game is being developed by the team behind 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man and its 2023 sequel.

The game will see Wolverine fight his way through Japan, North America, and the fictional city of Madripoor, and will also feature other favorite comic book characters, including Omega Red and Mystique.

"Become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes - using brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination to uncover the mystery of the man he once was," reads the game's official description.

The developers at Insomniac have previously emphasized that they want to give players "the ultimate Wolverine fantasy," but they also warned that the story is "much darker and more brutal than you would expect" from this studio.

"Bold, resilient, and unpredictable, Wolverine is a character that all of us at Insomniac are excited to explore in collaboration with our friends at Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment," the game's announcement reads.

“As with the 'Marvel's Spider-Man' franchise, we are once again joining forces to offer an original interpretation of the beloved Marvel comic book character,” they conclude.
