The film "Bohemian Rhapsody" about the group Queen was a big surprise at tonight's Golden Globe Awards, winning two leading awards for best film in the drama category and best actor Rami Malik in the role of frontman Ferdi Mercury.
The film "Green Book" is the second big winner with three awards, while "A Star is Born", which was nominated for five Globes, won only one for the song "Shallow".
"Green book" won the award for the best film in the musical or comedy category, the best screenplay and the best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali, the BBC reports.
Set in the 1960s, the film starring Mahershala Ali and Vig Mortensen tells the story of an African-American musician who hires an Italian-American driver to drive him on tour in the southern US.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" won awards despite mixed reviews and disruptions during filming when original director Bryan Singer was fired for "unreliable behavior" and replaced by Dexter Fletcher to finish the project.
However, the film was a hit at the box office and Golden Globe-winning actor Malek was tipped to win at the Oscars.
He dedicated his award to Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991. "This is for you and because of you, beautiful," Malek said.
Another big surprise of the night in the movie categories was Glenn Close who won the award for best actress in the movie drama category for her role in "The Wife". She beat out Lady Gaga, who was expected to win the award for A Star is Born.
The film "Roma" won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and director Alfonso Cuarón also won the award for Best Director for the work.
In the movie category musical or comedy for the best actor and actress, Christian Bale, unrecognizable in the role of American Vice President Dick Cheney in the movie "Vice" and Olivia Coleman as Queen Anne in the movie "The Favourite" won the awards.
It was a bit of a disappointment for the movie "Vice" which led in the number of nominations.
Globes are also awarded for television productions. Veteran Michael Douglas won the award for best actor for his role in the series "The Kominsky Method", which was also awarded as the best comedy series.
The series "The Americans" won the award for the best drama television series and Richard Madden, Rob Stark from "Game of Thrones" was awarded as the best actor in that category.
The 76th Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place last night local time at the Hilton Hotel in the Beverly Hills district of Los Angeles. The awards were hosted by actors Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg.
The Golden Globes, an American film award presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) since 1944, is often an indicator of which films will be awarded the prestigious Oscar. This year's 91st Academy Awards will be held on February 24.
