The legends of the French theater did not welcome the ideas of #MeToo and the Time's Up campaign with open arms. After Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot also criticized these movements.
First, Denev became the first face of an open letter, published in the French newspaper "Le Monde". It was signed by 100 French women, who stood behind the words that #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc, the French version of the mentioned campaign, act "against sexual freedom" and "in accordance with the wishes of religious extremists".
"A woman can in the same day lead a professional team and enjoy the position of a man's sexual object, without being 'promiscuous' or complicit in the patriarchy," the published letter stated, among other things.
After it caused a lot of counterreactions, fueled even more by the statement of one of the other signatories, radio host Brigitte Lae, who stated that some women feel sexual pleasure during rape, Denev distanced herself somewhat from some sentences.
“I am a single woman and will continue to be. I support all victims of heinous acts who may have felt affected by the letter published by 'Le Monde'. To them and only to them I apologize", wrote the famous actress in another letter, which was published by "Libération".
That storm did not calm down, and Brigitte Bardot also took the side of the critics of these movements. She told the French magazine "Paris Match" that many actresses, who complain about sexual harassment, "are just looking for publicity".
"Most are just hypocritical and ridiculous. Many actresses flirt with producers to get roles. And then, in order to talk about them, they say how they were harassed", believes Bardo.
Along the way, she also said that, although she was a "sex symbol" in the fifties, she was never a victim of sexual harassment. This statement can also be considered a matter of interpretation, because the actress added that she found it charming when men told her that she was beautiful or that she "had a nice butt".
On the other side of the ocean, Sharon Stone's laugh drew a lot of attention, when she was asked in an interview with CBS television whether she had ever been the target of such harassment.
"Lee, I've been in this business for 40 years," she answered the reporter after a long laugh, "can you imagine the industry I stepped into 40 years ago? Looking the way I do, coming from some backwater in Pennsylvania?”
Stone summed up everything she had to say on this topic in the words "I've seen it all".
