The realization of "Navalny", dedicated to Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny in prison in Russia, won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for best documentary in London this evening.
One of the main protagonists of the film, Kristo Grozev, could not attend the ceremony for security reasons.
Producer Odesa Rae paid tribute to investigative journalist Kristo Grozev, who appears in the documentary and was unable to be in London.
"Grozev gave up everything to tell this and other stories that need to be told," said the producer.
Grozev wrote "Wow" on Twitter after the award. He is the executive director of the Dutch portal Belingket (Bellingcat), which helped uncover the conspiracy to poison Navalny, which is now closed.
Navalny, whose health has deteriorated in recent months according to his relatives, was poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-made nerve agent, during a trip to Siberia in 2020. He was treated in Berlin and accused the Kremlin of being responsible.
Grozev said on Friday that British police prevented him from attending the award ceremony.
In response, the London police pointed out that Great Britain is concerned that "there are journalists on its soil who face the hostile intentions of foreign countries."
Bellingket, which was founded in July 2014 by the British blogger Eliot Higgins on the soil of the Netherlands, specializes in journalism based on the analysis of data available to everyone on the Internet.
Most of the portal's team has recently focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia, which recently called the site a "threat", deemed the organization "undesirable" on its territory.
The BAFTA award ceremony is underway in London.
