Russell Crowe was once offered the role of Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings", but the Hollywood actor refused after a discussion with director Peter Jackson, and today he does not regret it.
Jackson's trilogy later earned nearly three billion dollars worldwide and became one of the most popular trilogies ever, and the role of Aragorn was eventually cast by Viggo Mortensen.
"I'm not sorry. I had a feeling it was the studio making the decision, not the director. I spoke to Peter Jackson on the phone and he didn't say the things directors usually say if they really want you to be attracted to their project. I just had the feeling he wanted someone else and that if I had agreed, I would only be in the way," Crowe told GQ.
He explained that he comes from the same place as Jackson, from New Zealand, and that's why he could notice tones in the conversation that someone else wouldn't, that the director was telling him between the lines that he didn't want him.
Jackson will once again revive Middle-earth, this time as a producer on a new film in the franchise to be directed by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original. The new movie "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" should be released in 2026.
