Luca Guadagnino will direct the new adaptation of the novel "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis.

The Italian filmmaker, known for the films "Call Me by Your Name" and "The Challengers", will bring a fresh interpretation of this cult novel to the big screen, writes Deadline. Guadagnino will work with screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, who is known for his collaborations with Steven Soderbergh, including "Contagion," "Side Effects" and "The Informant."

"Luka is a brilliant artist and the perfect visionary to create a brand new interpretation of this powerful, classic work," Lionsgate president Adam Foglson said in a statement.

The 1991 novel caused controversy upon its publication, as it follows the violent story of a looks-obsessed investment banker who is also a serial killer. The novel was already adapted into a film in 2000 with Christian Bale in the lead role, and was later turned into a musical with Matt Smith. There have been speculations that Lionsgate is planning a TV series based on this novel in 2021.

Guadagnino was nominated for an Oscar as a producer for Call Me By Your Name, and is currently hitting the film festival circuit with his adaptation of William S. Burroughs' novel Queer, starring Daniel Craig. "The Challengers" became his biggest box office hit earlier this year, grossing $93,9 million worldwide.
