Polanski settled, he will not be tried for the alleged rape of a minor in 1973

Roman Polanski, the Oscar-winning filmmaker who fled the U.S. decades ago after pleading guilty to raping a 13-year-old girl, will no longer face trial for allegedly sexually assaulting another minor, after reaching a plea deal.

The latest case against the now 91-year-old director, which relates to an alleged sexual assault in 1973, was due to go before a civil court in Los Angeles in August next year, the Guardian reports.

The civil suit, filed last year, alleged that Polanski took the then-teenager - identified in court documents as Jane Doe - to dinner at a Los Angeles restaurant in 1973.

The lawsuit alleges that he gave her tequila, and when she began to feel dizzy, he took her to his home, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

"She told him, 'Please don't do that,'" prosecutor's representative Gloria Allred told reporters in March, adding that the alleged attack caused the plaintiff "tremendous physical and emotional pain and suffering."

However, the case was "settled over the summer to the mutual satisfaction of the parties and has now been formally dismissed," the director's lawyer, Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, told Agence France-Presse.

Allred confirmed this to the Guardian, saying a settlement agreement had been reached "to mutual satisfaction".

The lawsuit, which sought unspecified damages, was filed in June 2023, shortly before the expiration of a California law that allowed an extended deadline for filing lawsuits against alleged sex offenders.

Court documents filed in California in July indicated that a "conditional" agreement had been reached.

Polanski is a controversial figure. He pleaded guilty to raping a 13-year-old minor, Samantha Gamer, as part of a plea deal in 1977 to avoid trial on more serious charges.

However, he fled to France the following year, after serving 42 days in prison, when it became clear that a judge was considering re-detaining him. He has been a fugitive from the US ever since.

The gamer later defended him and was photographed with him last year.

Four women came forward between 2017 and 2019, accusing Polanski of abusing them in the 70s - three of them were allegedly minors at the time - including artist Marijana Barnard, who said Polanski sexually assaulted her when was 10 years old. In 2010, Charlotte Lewis, a British actress, accused Polanski of sexually assaulting her in 1983, when she was 16 years old. Polanski has denied all the allegations.

In May, a French court acquitted Polanski of defamation charges against Lewis after he denied raping her when she was a teenager.
