Jim Carrey announced in April 2022 that he was likely to retire from acting after reprising his role as the evil Dr. Robotnik in the film "Sonic the Hedgehog 2", which arrived in theaters the same month. It was Carrey's second time portraying this video game villain. He first starred as Robotnik in 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog," which was also his first major role in a major studio film since the 2014 sequel, "Dumb and Dumber To."
"Well, I'm retiring. Yeah, probably. I'm pretty serious," Carey told Access Hollywood during the promotional tour for "Sonic 2."
"It depends. If the angels bring me some script written in gold ink, telling me it's really important for people to see it, I might continue, but right now I'm taking a break. I really love my quiet life, I love painting on canvas, and I love my spiritual life. And I feel – and this is something you'll never hear from another celebrity – that I've done enough. I'm enough," he explained at the time.
However, Keri did not stay in retirement for long, as he returned to the role of Dr. Robotnik for the third time in the movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 3", which is released this month. Why does Keri keep coming back to the Sonic movie universe? Because of the money, he joked recently to AP Entertainment.
An AP reporter on the red carpet for "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" reminded Carrey of his earlier retirement statement, saying, "You said in an interview that you would only come back if you got a script written in gold ink by an angel."
"That could have been hyperbole, yeah. I'm back in this universe because I'm playing a genius, which is a bit of a challenge. And you know, I've bought a lot of stuff and, frankly, I need the money," Keri replied with a laugh.
Although the first "Sonic" film was Carrey's first major studio role in six years, he has since starred in the indie films "The Bad Batch" and "Dark Crimes." He also starred in Showtime's comedy series "Kidding," which ran for 20 episodes over two seasons before it was canceled. Carrey also guest-starred on six episodes of "Saturday Night Live" in 2020, playing Joe Biden.
"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" hits theaters on December 20, produced by Paramount
