Zendaya has been cast in an upcoming biopic about Ronnie Spector, the lead singer of the iconic female R&B group The Ronettes who was at the peak of her fame in the 60s. According to Pitchfork, the A24 film will be directed by Barry Jenkins, who directed the Oscar-winning film Moonlight.
Based on Spector's 1990 memoir "Be My Baby," the film will focus on her life with Phil Spector, one of the most famous music producers of all time who was later convicted of murdering actress Lana Clarkson, in a trial that revealed a history of his threatening behavior toward women.
It is not yet known when the film will be released in theaters.
Before her death in 2022, Ronnie Spector personally chose Zendaya, known to audiences from the series "Euphoria" and the films "Dune" and "Challengers," to play her. The script will be written by Dave Kajganich, who is behind such works as the sitcom "Suspiria" and "A Bigger Splash."
