Actor Michael Madsen has died at the age of 67 at his home in Malibu, authorities and his representatives said.

Los Angeles County police confirmed that no foul play was suspected after officers responded to a call for help on Thursday morning. Madsen was pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m., the Guardian reports.

His manager, Ron Smith, confirmed via email that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

"Over the past two years, Michael Madsen has worked on extraordinary independent film projects, including the upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook for Southern Housewives, and was truly looking forward to the next chapter in his life," Smith, his manager Susan Ferris and his publicist Liz Rodriguez said in a joint statement.

"He was also preparing a new book called Tears for My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems, which is currently in the editing phase. Michael Madsen was one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, who will be missed by many," they said.

Madsen was known for his roles as often enigmatic and humorous "tough guys" in films such as Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Reservoir Dogs, Thelma & Louise, and Donnie Brasco.

He also appeared in later Quentin Tarantino films (The Hateful Eight, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

Of the 346 roles listed on IMDb, the films The Doors, Free Willy, Species, Die Another Day, Sin City and Scary Movie 4 stand out.

He began his career in Chicago as a member of the Steppenwolf theater troupe, where he was a student of John Malkovich, and made his film debut in 1983 in the science fiction film WarGames.
