The dark comedy "One Battle After Another" has earned nine Golden Globe nominations, positioning the thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio as an early favorite on Hollywood's path to the Oscars.
The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring DiCaprio as a failed revolutionary who returns to action when his daughter's life is in danger, is a Warner Bros. production and will compete in the best motion picture - musical or comedy category, against "Marty Supreme" and "Bugonia," among others.
Norwegian family drama "Sentimental Value" earned eight nominations, narrowly ahead of horror film "The Sinners" with seven. Both were nominated for best drama film, along with Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of "Frankenstein" and William Shakespeare's family story "Hamnet," Reuters reports.
"'Frankenstein' is a film I've wanted to make for as long as I can remember, and for it to be received like this means a lot to me," del Toro said in a statement.
Nominees for acting awards include DiCaprio and his "One Fight" co-stars Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infinity and Tejana Taylor, who said the nominations left her "speechless and teary-eyed."
George Clooney and Adam Sandler received nominations for "Jay Kelly," as did Dwayne Johnson for "The Smashing Machine" and Jesse Buckley for "Hamnet."
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo earned nominations for their roles in "Wicked: For Good," although the second installment of Universal's "Wizard of Oz" prequel failed to make it into the musical or comedy categories.
The Golden Globes are among the first Hollywood awards to be presented before the film industry's top awards, the Oscars, in March. The Globes ceremony is scheduled to be televised on January 11.
The Golden Globes are voted on by entertainment journalists around the world. Their selection this year reflected a preference for films made outside of Hollywood, said Debra Birnbaum, editor of the awards website Gold Derby, Reuters reports.
In addition to "Sentimental Value", the Iranian thriller "It Happened by Chance" directed by Jafar Panahi and the Brazilian drama "The Secret Agent" were also nominated.
"The biggest surprise is the strong presence of all the international films," Birnbaum said. "I think those are the films we'll be following, not just at the Golden Globes but throughout the awards season."
In the new podcast category, Globe voters nominated "Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard," "Call Her Daddy," "Good Hang with Amy Poehler," "The Mel Robbins Podcast," "Smartless" and NPR's "Up First."
HBO's mystery holiday series "The White Lotus" led the TV categories with six nominations, ahead of Netflix's miniseries "Adolescence," about a 13-year-old accused of murder.
Netflix topped all networks with 22 nominations in television categories.
Independent distributor Neon, the studio behind "Sentimental Value," "It Happened by Chance" and "The Secret Agent," won the most film nominations - 21 in total.
The Globes winners are chosen by more than 300 entertainment journalists, compared with about 9.000 voters who choose the Oscars. The Globes voting body has been expanded in recent years, and organizers have introduced reforms after criticism of ethical lapses and a lack of diversity.
Comedian Nikki Glazer will host the Globes ceremony again, for the second time in a row
