Legendary comedian Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 100th birthday today, a full 60 years after he sang and danced with Julie Andrews in the film "Mary Poppins" and hosted a sitcom under his own name.
"The funny thing is, it's not enough. A hundred years is not enough. You want to live longer, which I plan to do," Van Dyke said in an interview with ABC News at his home in Malibu, California.
As part of Van Dyke's birthday celebrations this weekend, cinemas across the United States (US) will screen a new documentary about his life, "Dick Van Dyke - A 100th Celebration."
Van Dyke became one of the greatest actors of his era with The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961 to 1966 on CBS, appeared with Julie Andrews as a chimney sweep with a Cockney accent in the 1964 Disney film Mary Poppins, and played a detective doctor in the 1970s series Diagnosis: Murder.
Van Dyke was also a star on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for "Bye Bye Birdie" as well as a Grammy Award and four Emmy Awards. He also starred in the 1963 film version of "Bye Bye Birdie."
Last year, he became the oldest Emmy winner for his guest role on "Days of Our Lives."
In the 1970s, he managed to recover from alcoholism and spoke publicly about his struggle, which was unusual at the time.
Now that his age is in the triple digits, Van Dyke says he's gained some perspective on how he played older characters.
"You know, I've played a lot of older people and I've always portrayed them as angry and grumpy. And that's not really the case. I don't know other centenarians, but I can speak for myself," he told ABC News.
He recently spoke about reaching a century in his book "100 Rules for Living to 100 - An Optimist's Guide to a Happy Life." He credited his wife, makeup artist Arlene Silver, 54, with keeping him young.
"She gives me energy, she gives me humor and every kind of support," Van Dijk said.
Answering the question of what is difficult when you are a hundred years old, Van Dyke said: "I miss moving. I have one bad leg, I don't know what it is," adding that he still tries to dance.
