Action-packed dark comedy "One Battle After Another" leads the nominations for the BAFTA film awards, while the blockbuster "Sinners" also won a number of accolades at Britain's top film awards.
"One Battle After Another," in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays a failed revolutionary whose daughter is kidnapped, received 14 nominations, five of which were for the cast, including DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti, who plays his daughter, in the lead acting categories. Their co-stars Tejana Taylor, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro were nominated in the supporting acting categories.
The critically acclaimed film also earned a nomination for Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, and is in the running for the top prize, Best Picture, along with "Sinners," "Hamnet," "Marty Supreme," and "Sentimental Value."
"Sinners," which celebrates blues music and black culture in the segregated American South, received 13 nominations, including one for actor Michael B. Jordan, who plays twins who return to their hometown to open a juke joint.
Director Ryan Coogler is nominated in the directing and original screenplay categories, while cast member Vunmi Mosaku is in the running for supporting actress.
"Hamnet," which fictionalizes the relationship between William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes, as well as the death of their son, follows with 11 nominations.
Jessie Buckley is nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Shakespeare's wife, Agnes Hathaway, while Paul Mescal is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the Bard. Chloe Zhao is the only woman in the Best Director category. The film is an adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's 2020 best-selling novel of the same name and follows the ups and downs of their love story, as well as the grief over the loss of their son Hamnet, which leads Shakespeare to write "Hamlet."
In addition to Anderson and Coogler, Zhao is competing for the directing award with Josh Safdie for the table tennis story "Marty Supreme," Yorgos Lanthimos for "Bugonia" and Joachim Trier for the Norwegian family drama "Sentimental Value."
"Marty Supreme" received 11 nominations in total, including an expected nod for Timoteo Chalamet in the title role.
Also up for best actor are Robert Aramayo for his role as an activist with Tourette's syndrome in "I Swear," Ethan Hawke as songwriter Lawrence Hart in "Blue Moon," and Jesse Plemons for "Bugonia," in which his character kidnaps a pharmaceutical company executive, played by Emma Stone, believing her to be an alien.
Stone was also nominated in the lead actress category, along with Rose Byrne for her role as a mother whose life is falling apart in "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You," Kate Hudson for "Song Sung Blue," the story of a Neil Diamond tribute band, and Renate Reinswe for "Sentimental Value."
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were left out of the acting categories for their performances in Wicked: For Good.
The musical sequel was only nominated for costume design and makeup and hair, although that's more than at the Oscars, where it received no nominations. Its predecessor had seven BAFTA nominations.
