The Harry Potter series is coming to HBO and is a brand new adaptation of the famous books by J. K. Rowling.
The premiere is scheduled for December 25th of this year, and the first season will have eight episodes and follow the plot of the first book - The Philosopher's Stone.
The series is conceived as a long-term project spanning multiple seasons, where each season will cover one book, with the aim of making the story more faithful and detailed than the films.
The first season follows Harry's first year at Hogwarts, and the official synopsis reveals how an acceptance letter to the school of witchcraft and wizardry opens up a hidden world of magic and friendship for the boy. But with the wondrous adventures come dangers as Harry must confront a powerful enemy from his past.
The series also features a completely new cast - young wizard Harry Potter is played by Dominic McLaughlin, while Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley will be played by Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout.
The roles of professors and adult characters are joined by familiar names John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagal), Papa Esiedu (Snape) and Nick Frost (Hagrid).
The trailer shows key moments such as Harry's invitation to school and his first contact with the wizarding world. Hagrid's words to Harry that his parents were the bravest and noblest people he knew because they fought for what was right are striking, as is Ollivander's message to the boy that great things can be expected of him.
Along with the trailer, HBO Max posted a photo of McLaughlin in a Gryffindor robe on Instagram on his way to the Quidditch pitch, while the announcement premiere itself in London was held in a room decorated like Harry's little room under the stairs.
