Director Guillermo del Toro recently recalled an incident from his teenage years when he claimed to have seen a UFO, comparing the experience to the effects of magic mushrooms.
The Mexican filmmaker is known for tackling supernatural themes in his works, such as the Oscar-winning film “The Shape of Water,” the drama “Pan's Labyrinth,” and the “Hellboy” franchise.
"Anyone who knows me knows I'm a skeptic. But there are experiences that are so powerful that they can disrupt your sense of existence," he said in an interview with The Guardian, citing as an example the moment he saw a UFO (Unidentified Flying Object - a term often used to refer to aliens) at the age of 14.
“I had a friend with me as a witness. When things like that happen, something inside you snaps. You feel the mystery of the universe rushing towards you. It's like when you pick up mushrooms: the world suddenly seems a little bigger,” he recalled.
In the same interview, he also recalled the period when he was almost fired from the 1997 film "Mimic" due to a conflict with Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
"The Weinstein brothers almost destroyed me. I was on the verge of becoming someone no one would finance or hire. But I would give my life for 'Mimic'," he said.
