Director Peter Jackson has revealed that he is in talks to adapt additional works by JRR Tolkien, including "The Silmarillion."

The Oscar winner directed the original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy between 2001 and 2003, as well as “The Hobbit” trilogy from 2012 to 2014. These remain the only films directly adapted from Tolkien’s books, while projects like “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and the “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” series are based on information from appendices and notes within the books.

However, in an interview with Deadline, Jackson revealed that he and Warner Bros. are in talks with Tolkien's heirs about adapting works whose rights were previously unavailable, most notably "The Silmarillion."

It is a collection of myths and stories published posthumously in 1977, edited by Tolkien's son Christopher Tolkien.

The director believes that changes within the board of directors of the Tolkien estate could open the door to obtaining the rights.

"Christopher Tolkien edited and published other works by JRR Tolkien - 'The Silmarillion', 'Unfinished Tales' and many others. There are many Tolkien texts that could become great films, but the rights were simply never available," he explained.

"Christopher passed away a few years ago, and now the younger generation of the Tolkien family is leading the legacy. They are much more open to discussions, so Warner Bros and we are already talking to the younger family members who are now part of the board about the possibility of licensing the rights to other books. It would be nice to move away from the supplements and have something more substantial," he added.

Two more films based on Tolkien's world are currently in preparation.

The first is the prequel "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum", which will be directed by Andy Serkis, and the second project is the sequel "The Shadow of the Past", based on a chapter of the book "The Lord of the Rings", which will be adapted by Stephen Colbert.
