The series "Stranger Things" could have looked completely different if its creators Matt and Ross Duffer had managed to hire the original choice for the character of Sheriff Jim Hopper.

During an appearance on "Happy Sad Confused," the Duffer Brothers revealed who their first choice for police chief was. The question was posed to them in advance by David Harbour, who ultimately won the role of Hopper.

"Hi, Duffer Brothers. I'd like to know how the casting process for Hopper went. I'm pretty sure I was second choice, maybe even third. I'd like to know how I got the part and who had to turn it down so I could play it," Harbour asked them in a recorded message.

The showrunner assumed that Josh Brolin was the first choice, but Matt Duffer quickly debunked that theory.

"No, no, no... That was Billy Crudup, which would have been a completely different version of the character. But everything happens for a reason," said Matt Duffer, adding that Crudup turned down the role at the time because he wasn't interested in television projects at the time.

Ross Duffer explained that it was then that David Harbour caught the attention of one of the casting directors.

"He came to the audition and basically did one take. We weren't even there, we just watched the tape and it was immediately clear - it's Hopper. We hired him right away," Ross said.

Harbour ended up playing the sheriff throughout all five seasons of "Stranger Things," alongside Winona Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown, who plays his adopted daughter in the series.
