The creators of the series "Stranger Things" have said they are ready to reveal what really happened to the character Eleven at the end of the series - provided that fans are willing to wait another 20 years.

The series, which premiered in 2016, immediately became a huge hit on Netflix, and ended in late 2025, when the two-hour finale of the fifth season aired on New Year's Eve.

The final episode showed a group of friends - Mike, Dustin, Max, Steve and the others - coming together one last time to defeat the evil Loaf.

However, when the closing credits rolled, there was a great deal of uncertainty about the fate of the main character Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown.

The writers intentionally created an ambiguous ending for the character, so it's not entirely clear whether Eleven truly sacrificed herself to save her friends. Even the other characters doubted whether she died, but ultimately decided to believe that she was alive somewhere and hiding away from the public eye.

Months after the series ended, fans are still debating what really happened, and the show's creators, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, have now revealed that they are ready to clarify its official fate... but not anytime soon.

Speaking on the "Happy, Sad, Confused" podcast, the Duffer brothers said they would wait as long as 20 years before confirming the true meaning of the ending.

When asked when fans can expect definitive answers, Ross joked:

"If we're talking to you about 'Stranger Things' in 20 years - then in 20 years."

As he said, he hopes that "people will still be interested in it in 2046."

"That would be great, and then I will say absolutely everything," he claims.

In the rest of the interview, the Duffer brothers continued to avoid giving a direct answer about Eleven's fate, but they admitted that some fans interpreted the final sound in the series - resembling a heartbeat - as a sign that the character was still alive.

"The script says it's supposed to sound like a heartbeat, but the sound is actually just... distorted. Although, it could be interpreted that way. In fact, it was partly intended for people to think that way," Matt admitted.

The writers also admitted that they were surprised to learn that some cast members said after the series ended that they didn't believe Eleven survived.

"They never told me that," Matt said, referring to comments from actors like Gaten Matarazzo and Sadie Sink.

"I have to talk to them. I'm not saying they're wrong. I just find it interesting that everyone came to that conclusion without talking to us, because that's not what the characters believe. I mean, they're good actors, so I don't know what's going on," Matt commented.
