Actor James Handy, who last starred in the film "Top Gun: Maverick," was stabbed to death Wednesday morning in Los Angeles, authorities said. Handy was 81 years old.
The suspect, Michael Gledhill, 44, was stopped by Los Angeles police officers after a 911 call was made around 9:30 a.m., police said.
According to a police statement, reported by NBC News, the person who called 911 allegedly said:
"I am the Son of Man, I have just killed the man of sin."
A representative for Hendi confirmed his death.
"It is with great sadness that I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday was actor James Handy," his agent Pam Ellis-Evenas said.
Officers who responded to the call found Hendy unconscious in the front yard of a home in the Tarzana neighborhood, with a stab wound to the chest.
Upon police arrival, Gledhill stopped them and said “he is the person they are looking for,” police said.
Gledhill, who lives in the house with his mother, was arrested and charged with murder.
In addition to the 2022 film "Top Gun: Maverick," in which Handy played the character of bartender Jimmy, he also appeared in the films "Arachnophobia" and "Jumanji," as well as in numerous television series.
He played a doctor in the film "Logan" about the character Wolverine from the X-Men universe, and also had roles in the series "NCIS: Los Angeles", "CSI: NY", "NYPD Blue" and "Law & Order", among many other works.
