Singer Jennifer Lopez is returning to her acting roots in a new film for Netflix.
Although Lopez is best known for her music career and hits like "Jenny from the Block" and "On the Floor," she originally gained fame as an actress on the show "In Living Color" and films like "Selena" and "Anaconda."
During the 2000s, she successfully combined singing and acting, winning over audiences with romantic comedies such as "Maid in Manhattan" and "The Wedding Planner." Although she later expanded her acting repertoire to various genres, she occasionally returns to romantic comedies, as is the case with her new Netflix film "Office Romance."
In the film, Lopez plays an airline executive who is in a secret relationship with her lawyer Daniel, played by Bret Goldstein, known for the series "Ted Lasso."
The first reviews have come in, but the film has not been particularly well-received by critics. On the website Rotten Tomatoes, after 24 published reviews, "Office Romance" currently has a rating of 42 percent.
Critics cited weak dialogue, a predictable story, an uneven tone considering the R rating (restricted to those under 17 without adult supervision), and an unconvincing chemistry between Lopez and Goldstein as the main flaws.
In a review for ScreenRant, critic Alex Harrison was among those who gave the film a positive review, giving it 7 out of 10 stars. According to him, although the film has the basis of a classic romantic comedy, the working environment and humor manage to give it a certain distinctiveness, while the chemistry between the main actors creates an energy that makes the audience root for their characters.
However, this is the first Jennifer Lopez film after "Unstoppable" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" to receive a negative overall critical score.
The Rotten Tomatoes score also continues Lopez's unfavourable streak of collaborations with Netflix. Since 2022, the actress has produced four projects for the platform, with only her documentary "Halftime" receiving a positive ("fresh") rating of 82 percent.
This was followed by the action films "The Mother" (42%) and "Atlas" (17%), which received mixed to negative reviews.
Despite this, both films have been huge successes on streaming. “The Mother” became the sixth most-watched Netflix film in 2023, while “Atlas” was the most-watched film in 71 countries the following year.
Therefore, it is expected that "Office Romance", despite weaker reviews, could achieve good results on the platform.
