British actor Hugh Laurie has sparked a debate on social media after responding to criticism of the series "House," when one X-rated user claimed that the series has "the same story in every episode."
The actor, who played the lead role in the medical drama from 2004 to 2012, didn't mince his words when he responded to journalist Janet Murray's post over the weekend.
She wrote that the series has "the same narrative structure in every episode" and relies on formulaic and repetitive storytelling.
"A patient has a mysterious illness. Hugh Laurie (House) makes a wrong diagnosis. The patient almost dies. Hugh Laurie makes another wrong diagnosis. He is threatened with dismissal. The patient almost dies again. Hugh Laurie gets a completely unexpected idea at the last minute. He makes the correct diagnosis. He doesn't get fired. Eight seasons of this?" she stated, and Laurie himself soon answered her.
"Thanks for the critique, Janet. We actually tried a few episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) immediately makes the correct diagnosis, but they only lasted six minutes," the actor humorously replied.
"NBC wasn't happy. Then we tried a few episodes where House never makes the correct diagnosis and the patient dies. The audience wasn't happy," Laurie added.
"Your insightful analysis could be applied to other art forms: Johann Sebastian Bach wrote 30 Goldberg Variations on the same harmonic structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 self-portraits; Henri Mouret, so what?" he pointed out.
"The point was, or is, a variation on a theme. If you only see hospital, medicine and blah blah blah in all of this, then it simply wasn't meant for you," he concluded.
X Network users were divided, with some writing that they wanted "a new season of 'House' where he analyzes tweets" and praising the way Lori "turned a regular Twitter lament into something interesting," while others thought his reaction was over the top.
