The film “Michael” has officially become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, surpassing “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
The film follows the life of Michael Jackson, from his early days with The Jackson 5 in the 1960s to his “Bad World Tour” in the late 1980s. The lead role is played by his nephew, Jafar Jackson.
The film premiered in April and then achieved the highest opening weekend gross in the history of musical biopics. According to Deadline, it has so far earned $911,9 million at the global box office, making it the most profitable film of its kind ever.
The recent release in Japan further increases the film's chances of surpassing the $1 billion mark, which only "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" has managed to do so far in 2026.
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” the 2018 film that told the story of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen, earned a total of $910,9 million.
Both films were produced by Graham King, and Lionsgate, which is distributing the film in the US, has confirmed that a sequel to “Michael” is already in the works. The company’s president, Adam Fogelson, said last month that the second film may not directly continue the story where the first one left off.
The film's final scene shows Jackson performing at Wembley Stadium in 1988, after which the caption appears: "His story continues."
Many expect that a potential sequel could address the child sexual abuse allegations that have been leveled against Jackson over the years. The original script for the film “Michael” included those events in the final part of the story, but a clause in the legal agreement was later revealed that forbade mentioning Jordan Chandler, one of his accusers.
Because of this, the film had to go through additional filming worth around $50 million to change the ending.
