"Disclosure Day" earns $93 million in its opening weekend

Steven Spielberg dominated the box office this weekend with "Disclosure Day," his alien drama that earned $44 million in the U.S. market and $93 million worldwide, according to data from Rentrak.

At 79 years old, the American director has shown that he can still completely win over movie audiences, both critically and commercially, even with his 37th feature film as a director, writes Entertainment Weekly.

His return to the alien theme after 12 years ('Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' was Spielberg's last film to feature the creatures, while 2005's 'War of the Worlds' was the last to be entirely devoted to them) also earned him his best opening at the box office in nearly a decade. 'Ready Player One' previously grossed $53 million domestically in its opening weekend in 2018.

While "Disclosure Day" premiered in theaters this weekend and practically collected all the money from ticket sales, the film, which took second place domestically and third place globally, achieved arguably an even more impressive success.

"Obsession," the twist-filled horror thriller and feature debut of 24-year-old YouTube star Kari Barker, has returned to the top three in its fifth week of release. Made on a remarkably modest budget estimated at between $750,000 and $1 million, Obsession has earned an additional $19 million in the United States and $34 million worldwide, bringing its total to an impressive $188,3 million domestically and $286,5 million globally.
