Netflix cancels sequel to "The Boroughs"

The Duffer Brothers failed to replicate the success they had with "Stranger Things," and "The Boroughs" will not be getting a second season, as Netflix has decided not to continue with the sci-fi series. Matt and Ross Duffer were the producers of the series.

This news is somewhat surprising, as, according to available information, there were talks about renewing the series for a new season. A writing room for a second season was even formed, which is a common practice for many high-budget and prestigious series. According to sources, one of the ideas was to shoot the second and third seasons back-to-back.

However, that was before "The Boroughs," written by Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews, premiered last month to very good reviews but relatively poor ratings.

The series has often been described as “Stranger Things for seniors,” and it only drew a modest 5,6 million views in its first weekend. Coming on the heels of the huge success of the final season of “Stranger Things,” it was expected that another Duffer Brothers sci-fi series would get off to a stronger start.

During its first full week of airing, "The Boroughs" increased its viewership to 9,5 million, but the very next week, viewership dropped sharply to 3,7 million views, signaling that the series was unlikely to achieve long-term audience growth.
