Will Ferrell has assembled a team of close collaborators and friends for the new Netflix series "The Hawk," and it is this connection between the actors that has brought a special energy to the project.
The actor known for the films "The Host Strikes Back" and "Brothers in Arms" revealed that the most fun moments during filming often occurred outside of the scenes themselves, through socializing and reminiscing about joint projects.
"Some of the funniest moments were when we would just sit around the monitor and Molly Shannon, Chris Parnell and I would tell stories from our time on 'Saturday Night Live,'" Farrell said.
He added that the atmosphere on set was different than on many other projects, precisely because the series was created in collaboration with people he knows and has worked with for years.
"The Hawk" was conceived by Farrell, who plays the series' lead character Lonnie Hawkins, a once-successful golfer trying to regain his former glory. His longtime friends, former "Saturday Night Live" writer Harper Steele and director Chris Henchy, also participated in the project.
In addition to Farrell, the cast includes Molly Shannon as his ex-wife Stacey, Jimmy Tatro as his son Lance, who resents his father for his past, and Fortune Feimsteier as Sam.
The story follows Lonnie Hawkins, whose golf career peaked in 2004, as he tries to return to the top of the game. Despite family problems and broken relationships, he doesn't give up on trying to find success again.
Molly Shannon, who has worked with Farrell since their days on "Saturday Night Live" in the mid-1990s, admitted that it wasn't easy for her to act angry towards him on the show.
"It was difficult because I'm very close to Will," she said.
Jimmy Tatro, on the other hand, pointed out that it was interesting for him to play a character who despises Farrell's hero on the show, while privately appreciating him greatly.
"It was funny to hate someone so much on the show, and admire that person so much in real life," he said.
Farrell explained that he was particularly attracted to the idea of making a story about people whose lives revolve around golf.
"I've always been fascinated by the world of golf. It's an incredibly demanding sport for people who stand over one ball for hours, trying to make every shot perfect. I thought: that must drive you crazy," the actor said.
