“The Last of Us” game creator Neil Druckmann has distanced himself from the third and final season of the HBO adaptation, but hinted that several more projects are “in the works.”
Druckman was one of the writers and directors of the first two seasons of the HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us,” but shortly after the second season finale aired, he announced that he would be stepping down from the series, along with the game’s original screenwriter, Hayley Gross.
"Before any serious work on season three begins, now is the right time to fully commit to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our next exciting game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as my responsibilities as studio head and creative director," Drakman said in a statement.
"I am deeply grateful for the thoughtful approach and dedication that the talented cast and production team have shown in adapting 'The Last of Us Part I', as well as in the sequel adaptation, 'The Last of Us Part II,'" he added.
It was confirmed at the time that another member of the Naughty Dog team, which developed the games, would remain involved in the writing team for season three. However, Drakman further distanced himself from the project in a new interview.
“I had no part in shaping the creative direction of this season, and ‘Naughty Dog’ had no creative role in determining the direction of this season,” he said in a new interview with The Washington Post.
"It's important for us to emphasize that Naughty Dog, as the game creator, remains the custodian of this intellectual property and that, even if this is the end of this adaptation, we are not done with The Last of Us," he continued.
