Transcripts of text messages exchanged between Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and actress Kate del Castillo show he was less interested in making a movie about his life and more in flirting with a Mexican actress.
The messages, which were published yesterday by the "Milenio" newspaper, and their authenticity was confirmed by a Mexican official, show that Guzman was most interested in meeting the actress face to face, and that he did not actually know who the American actor Sean Penn was, she said. agency AP.
Penn admitted that he later intruded on a meeting that Del Castillo had scheduled with Guzmán to discuss plans to make a film about the drug lord's life, which took place on October 2 in the mountains where "El Chapo" was hiding.
"What is that actor's name?", said one message from a number confirmed to have been used by Guzman.
He later asked his lawyers to tell him which films Penn had appeared in.
A Mexican official, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that "El Chapo's" messages, of which there are dozens, are authentic. Many express admiration and longing for the next meeting, instead of interest in the planned film project.
"I'm telling you, I'm more excited about meeting you than I am about a movie script," Guzman once wrote to the actress, whom he remembered in his phone book as "ermoza," a misspelling of the Spanish word for "beauty."
In another message, the drug lord writes to Del Castillo: "How is the best and most intelligent woman in the world, whom I admire a lot?".
Guzman, who is married to former Miss Emma Coronel and has children with her, as well as other women, wrote in one message: "My mother wants to meet you. I told her about you."
The actress replies, "Besides our film project, I'm very excited to see you live," and later adds, "We'll be hugging soon!"
Mexican analyst Alejandro Ope states: "What's strange about it? The fact that Guzman is weak for women? He has 18 children, he's married to a woman 30 years younger than him. There's nothing strange about it."
Guzmán was captured on Friday after a shootout between his aides and Mexican marines at a home in the coastal city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa state. On that occasion, five criminals were killed and six more were injured.
Authorities say they were able to discover Guzman's location thanks to an interview Sean Penn had with him.
