Gathered behind the slogan/hashtag #50dollarsnot50shades (50 dollars, not 50 shades), several American associations for the fight against domestic violence and anti-pornography associations called today for a boycott of the film "Fifty Shades - Gray".
These organizations believe that the film, which opens in US cinemas next Sunday, idealises the violent sadomasochistic relationship between the wealthy and domineering Christian Gray and the naïve college student Anastasia Steele.
Representatives of the mentioned groups especially emphasize the violence hidden in the dialogues and accuse the producers of falsely presenting the film as a love story.
"That is a lie. The film talks about abuse, violence and preparing a young woman for a sadistic sexual relationship," reads the joint statement of these organizations.
Feminists, through Facebook, called on the public to donate $50 to a humanitarian organization that helps women victims of abuse - "like the one whose fate the film wants to present as something glamorous", instead of spending that money "on cinema tickets, a babysitter, popcorn and juices ".
"Hollywood doesn't need your money, but abused women do," the message reads.
"Women in real life don't end up like Anastasia; they usually end up in a women's shelter, on the run or dead," noted one activist in a statement to the Washington Times. The #50dollarsnot50shades campaign has so far received 4.600 likes on Facebook.
