An American brewery has decided to no longer use the name and likeness of Mahatma Gandhi on one of its beers, after complaints that its marketing was offensive to the Indian community in the US.
The label of New England brewery Gandhi-bot pale ale features a robotic version of the late Indian prohibitionist leader. The Connecticut brewery apologized earlier this month to anyone who thought it was inappropriate for its beer to be named after Gandhi, and for the legendary Indian leader to be depicted as a robot.
The company said it decided to change the beer's name after meeting with business owners, politicians and religious figures from the American Hindu community, including Congressman Prasad Srinivasan. Srinivasan, who is originally from India, said he was glad the brewery "heard the grievances of the American Indian community."
Gandi-bot beer, which has been on sale for five years, was promoted on the producer's website as "completely vegetarian" and "ideal for self-purification and the search for truth and love".
