It was one of the greatest love stories in history, and now an extract from Napoleon and Josephine's marriage book will be offered at auction in September.
The document dated March 8, 1796 was signed by Napoléon and his fiancee Marie Joseph Rose Tache de la Pagery, that is, Josephine de Boarne. The couple married a day later, and the marriage certificate was notarized in Paris on March 18.
Although history remembers them as passionately in love, this document shows that they were also very practical, writes AFP.
The agreement states that the couple will not be responsible for the other's debts and mortgages and that they will not own any property together.
The document is expected to sell for 100.000 euros at an auction in Paris on September 21. Other documents from that era will also be offered at the auction.
At auction in 2007, a love letter written by Josephine to Napoleon before her marriage sold for five times the estimated sum.
The marriage of Napoleon and Josephine was annulled in 1810 as they had no children.
