The Ugandan government on Wednesday banned one of the country's main TV networks from covering the activities of President Yoweri Museveni until further notice after it aired a segment showing the president dozing in parliament.
"The president has his rituals. He meditates, and they (television people) know it well, so they still said he was sleeping," said Denis Katungi, the government representative in charge of the media.
He confirmed that NTV Uganda, which is part of the powerful independent media group Nation Media Group, was sanctioned for the said reportage.
"We have banned her from monitoring the president's activities and we will review our relationship with them," Katungi said, accusing NTV of "lack of professionalism and biased reporting."
"The suspension should not be permanent, it is only temporary, to make them think," he added.
President Joveri Museveni, 69, has led the impoverished East African nation since 1986. Last year, the Ugandan government shut down two major independent newspapers for ten days when they reported on a row between senior officers over whether the president's son should succeed his father as leader. of the state.
