Japanese man Mamoru Demizu was arrested after he was found to have stolen money and jewelry to pay for food for 120 cats in his care, Japanese police said today.
Demizu, an unemployed 48-year-old, is suspected of breaking into several houses and stealing 19 million yen (134.000 euros) worth of money and jewelry.
Demizu told police he was stealing to pay for cat food, which required him 25.000 yen, or 175 euros, a day.
He lived alone with one cat, but kept about 20 more in a nearby warehouse and fed another 100 stray cats.
"He didn't give them canned pâté, but fresh fish and chicken," the police said.
