After years of speculation, debate and questions, the debate over whether Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) could have survived the sinking of the Titanic is finally over. It was solved by the authors of the show "MythBusters", proving that, with a little help from his beloved Rose (Kate Winslet), he too could overcome hypothermia.
At the end of the blockbuster "Titanic", director James Cameron broke the hearts of millions of girls, leaving the free-spirited Jack to freeze, clinging to the board on which he placed his new girlfriend Kate. It was his last sacrifice, as he sank with the Titanic, saving the love of his life.
But did it have to happen and why didn't Jack also climb onto the board, which was big enough to hold both of them? This question was recently answered by Cameron himself, who stated that Jack remained in the water, not because he could not stand on the board, but because, if he had climbed on it, it would have sunk.
"It wasn't a matter of space, it was a question of buoyancy. Jack put Rose on the raft, and then he climbed up too, but the raft sank. Well, he's not an idiot, he didn't want to die. It's just that the raft could only be above water if there was one person on it. And he sacrificed himself so that Rose would live," Cameron explained.
However, Adam and Jamie from "MythBusters" think otherwise, and they proved it – Both Jack and Rose could have survived if Rose took off her life jacket and put it under the raft.
In that case, both would stay above water and survive. That would only happen in real life though. In film, says Cameron, different rules apply.
"The script says that Jack dies. That's why he had to die," the director concluded the discussion.
