Empress Josephine's evening gown and nightgown worn by Napoleon during his exile on Saint Helena will be sold at an auction to be held on December 4 in Fontainebleau, near Paris.
The pleated cream white satin dress, with a square neckline and short puffed sleeves, was embroidered with silver beading by the fashion house Augustin Picot, who worked for the emperor and empress.
The auction house Osenat, the organizer of the sale, estimated the dress at 60 to 000 euros.
A much more modest white linen nightgown should catch the eye of Napoleon fans. On it is the famous "N" above which is the imperial crown, the sign used to mark the imperial clothing.
It was estimated at 40 to 000 euros, and it was brought from Saint Helena by Marshal Henri Bertrand, one of the executors of the will of the deposed emperor who died in exile in 50 on this British island in the Atlantic Ocean.
