As part of the project "Bear in Mind – Bringing environmental actions for the biodiversity protection across the borders" financed by the European Union, a brown bear (Ursus Arctos) marked with a GPS transmitter was caught for the purpose of telemetric monitoring via satellite.
As announced by the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP), this is the first bear of its kind caught in the "Piva" nature park, and its movement, habitat, feeding dynamics, as well as other scientifically interesting habits will be monitored.
"The bear was caught in the locality of Borje and, accordingly, it was named Borko. This year, for the purpose of telemetric monitoring, it is planned to mark another brown bear, this time on the territory of the national park "Durmitor". The data obtained in this way will, among other things, also serve for the development of the Brown Bear Management Plan on the territory of the protected areas of the "Piva" nature park and the "Durmitor" national park, which are the final beneficiaries of the project, according to the CZIP announcement.
The conducted activity, apart from the scientific-research aspect, as it is added, will help to present a wild animal such as the brown bear to the general public in the right way, and thus break prejudices, wrong beliefs and fear of this animal.
"Information about the movement and behavior of the Borka bear, which will be collected and published, will show that this species is not an attacker that destroys everything around it, but that it is a very cautious animal that prefers to avoid people. In this way, their behavior will be better understood an immeasurably important role in the forest ecosystem, as one of the most valuable representatives of biological diversity that plays a major role in its preservation," said veterinary doctor Slaven Reljić.
The "BEAR in Mind" project, which the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds implements in cooperation with partner organizations from Bosnia and Herzegovina (the Ornithological Society "Naše ptice" and the Association for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development "Naša Baština"), is financed by the European Union in within the IPA Program of cross-border cooperation Bosnia and Herzegovina - Montenegro 2014-2020, as well as the Ministry of Public Administration through the program of co-financing of projects and programs of non-governmental organizations supported by the funds of the European Union for the year 2020.
The project is designed in such a way that the protection of biological diversity of the cross-border area of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro is a central theme, and in this way the species characteristic of that region are protected. In this way, the protection of the eco system of those locations (especially important forests) will be ensured, all through the implementation of a whole series of activities such as: strengthening the capacity of administrative units of protected areas and the civil sector in the field of environmental protection, creating monitoring protocols and management plans for protected species birds and mammals in accordance with EU directives, and strengthening the local population's awareness of the benefits of high standards in the protection of endangered species.
